I had the opportunity sit down for a one on one conversation with newly elected Lancaster Mayor R. Rex Parris. Mayor Parris has several plans for addressing issues pertinent to the residents of Lancaster. The mayor exhibit’s a great since of determination and dedication toward the office of mayor. His positive attitude is refreshing and his excitement about moving forward is infectious. The future that Mayor Parris envisions includes all of the citizens of Lancaster. With crime reduction being a first priority, the mayor is very concerned about those least able to defend themselves. Coming from a humble beginning, gives this mayor some insight as it pertains to many that have shared a similar back ground. The mayor plans to lead with great authority on the one hand and a velvet glove on the other. Given a chance the residents of Lancaster should see their city moving in a positive direction.

The May 10th protest against illegal immigration got somewhat out of hand as a result of a counter protester. The Palmdale Sherriff Department was called in and one individual (pictured on the right) was detained cited and released. The Antelope Valley Independent Minutemen found themselves being attacked with rocks, hot coffee and many insults. There was much name calling that added to some of the frayed tempers but there were no injuries. Had the Sherriff department not responded with decisive action there was the potential this would have gotten worse. From the interviews that took place, the protesters were maintaining a position against illegal immigration. And the counter protesters took the position, they are being targeted based on their ethnicity. In my opinion until the government takes some real action regarding this debate, the two factions will continue with this social struggle, with violence being the next evolutionary step.

Statistics show that children who have not learned to read by the 3rd grade will fall</itunes:subtitle>

04.16.2008---
Statistics show that children who have not learned to read by the 3rd grade will fall behind in school. The mechanics of learning to read are taught from Kindergarten through 3rd grade - decoding, encoding, phonics and phonemic awareness (the ability to hear the individual sounds of the letters within words) are dropped from the curriculum starting in 4th grade. At that time, children start to use their reading skills to learn new ideas - "Reading to Learn" instead of "Learning to Read."
There can be many reasons a child does not learn to read by 3rd grade. Learning disabilities, including Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and many others can, if not caught and addressed early on, contribute to the feelings of failure a child can feel when he/she falls behind in school. If you suspect your child has a learning disability, see your doctor. Be specific about the behaviors he/she is exhibiting and request that your child to be tested for learning disabilities.
The Lancaster City Council was rearranged last night [04.08.2008] as councilman Andy Visokey(r), pictured left with Amir Raheem, lost his bid for a fourth term. New comers Sherry Marquez and Ken Mann were able to claim victory for their efforts, in a crowded field of eleven. Tuesdays election put an end to some very bitter campaigning. Some of the vitriol spilled over onto some internet blog sites. Some characterized the personal attacks as extraordinary, while others attributed much of the hostility to what has been viewed as a national phenomenon. Time will quite possibly be the sole factor determining the outcome for this desert community north of Los Angeles. Download the webcast to hear reactions from some of the candidates.

The Antelope Valley Black Chamber of Commerce made a Grand Antelope Valley debut February 29, 2008. This, being the first time ever... African American citizens in the Antelope Valley have developed the organization necessary to incorporate... Many of the members celebrated this step forward as long over-due. With a myriad of issues to address, the Board of Directors has resigned itself to a full slate of work. First on the calendar the AVBCC will join with others from around the state as they meet in Bakersfield, California for a leadership conference hosted by the California Black Chamber of Commerce Foundation, where this year the theme is “Moving the Urban Agenda”.

The Antelope Valley Black Chamber of Commerce (AVBCC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan and nonsectarian business organization dedicated to economic empowerment and community development.
Buddy Montgomery was born Jan. 30, 1930, Indianapolis, Indiana) is an American jazz vibraphonist and pianist. He is the youngest brother of Wes and Monk Montgomery.
Buddy first played professionally in 1948; in 1949 he played with Big Joe Turner and soon after with Slide Hampton. After a stint in the Army, where he had his own quartet, he joined Mastersounds as a vibraphonist with his brother Monk. He led the Montgomery-Johnson Quintet with Ray Johnson from 1955 and 1957. His earliest sessions as a leader are from the late 1950s. He played briefly with Miles Davis in 1960, and throughout the 1960s the Montgomery brothers frequently played together. In 1969 he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and taught jazz music locally. Early in the 1980s he moved to Oakland; there he released more solo material and played with the Riverside Reunion Band, Charlie Rouse, David Fathead Newman and Bobby Hutcherson

Robbie beck is a resident of the city of Lancaster, California. As it came to be, a private business was operating in the city. The business involved removing for the purpose of disposal, hazardous and toxic waste. However, the materials collected for disposal, were in fact stored in bulk at the company’s facility in violation of the business license. Numerous complaints went unheeded for several years. The surface of the soil was eventually cleared of the chemical substance, but there is continued concern for what is buried at the site.
This illegal site is a mere few hundred yards from one of the regions natural aquifers. Logic would force thoughts of possible contamination due to ground water precipitation/percolation through the soil to the ground water table. The investigation is on going, and to date there has been no determination made as to the effects of long term exposure. Moving forward with a civil law suite is group of Los Angeles/Beverly Hills Lawyers, that have cited negligence on the part of the city of Lancaster and many others named in the law suite. Apparently there exist a proviso that requires “cradle to grave” responsibility of those involved with generating “hazardous or toxic waste”.<img src="http://www.mypodcast.com/image-203603">
