Golden Steps Youth & Families is an organization created by Monique Johnson (pictured left) and developed for the purpose of steering at-risk youth away from destructive behaviors and toward success in life through vocational training, education, and the arts. It is the vision of Golden Steps Youth and Families to develop young men and women into goal-oriented, college-bound, and work ready individuals who will become successful leaders in the communities in which they live. We see young entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, CEOs, doctors, nurses, lawyers, and mentors coming out of our programs.
Our staff consists of volunteers who share the same commitment to helping youth succeed. We have a team of caring adults and young people who dedicate themselves to understanding the needs of today's youth and working to bring needed programs to enhance their quality of life.

Statistics show that children who have not learned to read by the 3rd grade will fall behind in school. The mechanics of learning to read are taught from Kindergarten through 3rd grade - decoding, encoding, phonics and phonemic awareness (the ability to hear the individual sounds of the letters within words) are dropped from the curriculum starting in 4th grade. At that time, children start to use their reading skills to learn new ideas - "Reading to Learn" instead of "Learning to Read."
There can be many reasons a child does not learn to read by 3rd grade. Learning disabilities, including Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and many others can, if not caught and addressed early on, contribute to the feelings of failure a child can feel when he/she falls behind in school. If you suspect your child has a learning disability, see your doctor. Be specific about the behaviors he/she is exhibiting and request that your child to be tested for learning disabilities. The Lancaster City Council was rearranged last night [04.08.2008] as councilman Andy Visokey(r), pictured left with Amir Raheem, lost his bid for a fourth term. New comers Sherry Marquez and Ken Mann were able to claim victory for their efforts, in a crowded field of eleven. Tuesdays election put an end to some very bitter campaigning. Some of the vitriol spilled over onto some internet blog sites. Some characterized the personal attacks as extraordinary, while others attributed much of the hostility to what has been viewed as a national phenomenon. Time will quite possibly be the sole factor determining the outcome for this desert community north of Los Angeles. Download the webcast to hear reactions from some of the candidates.

The Antelope Valley Black Chamber of Commerce made a Grand Antelope Valley debut February 29, 2008. This, being the first time ever... African American citizens in the Antelope Valley have developed the organization necessary to incorporate... Many of the members celebrated this step forward as long over-due. With a myriad of issues to address, the Board of Directors has resigned itself to a full slate of work. First on the calendar the AVBCC will join with others from around the state as they meet in Bakersfield, California for a leadership conference hosted by the California Black Chamber of Commerce Foundation, where this year the theme is “Moving the Urban Agenda”.
The Antelope Valley Black Chamber of Commerce (AVBCC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan and nonsectarian business organization dedicated to economic empowerment and community development. Buddy Montgomery was born Jan. 30, 1930, Indianapolis, Indiana) is an American jazz vibraphonist and pianist. He is the youngest brother of Wes and Monk Montgomery.
Buddy first played professionally in 1948; in 1949 he played with Big Joe Turner and soon after with Slide Hampton. After a stint in the Army, where he had his own quartet, he joined Mastersounds as a vibraphonist with his brother Monk. He led the Montgomery-Johnson Quintet with Ray Johnson from 1955 and 1957. His earliest sessions as a leader are from the late 1950s. He played briefly with Miles Davis in 1960, and throughout the 1960s the Montgomery brothers frequently played together. In 1969 he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and taught jazz music locally. Early in the 1980s he moved to Oakland; there he released more solo material and played with the Riverside Reunion Band, Charlie Rouse, David Fathead Newman and Bobby Hutcherson

My Profile
Amir Raheem
Lancaster, California
I was born in Los Angeles, CA. in the early fifties. Growing up during that time, the San Fernando Vallley was a simpler place and time. Needless to say I grew up, got married, joined the military, worked as a welder for many years, bought a home in Palmdale, CA. and moved the family to the desert in 1988. Well the kids grew up, I got divorced. Quite working as a welder...got into Bartending (Red Lobster), and in 1995 got my first radio job at the local country & western station. Yeah you are reading correctly...I went on the air over-nights, as C.W. "The Over-Nite Cowboy". From there... on to Chandler Broadcasting (which morphed into High Desert Broadcasting) where I produced several talk shows, which eventually led to producing my own show. Good fortune has allowed me to host both music and talk formats, and I have enjoyed broadcasting ever since.
Being the proud Grandparent of 10, has changed some of my approach toward life and with each year that I celebrate above ground, my mission is revealed in a much more focused manner. Hopefully I am getting wiser as time goes by :-), however you never know until the next BIG mistake. Thanks for logging on to my podcast. It is my hope you will enjoy listening and somewhere in my rambling you'll hear something that you can take away and utilize in your life experince. You can always contact me directly...amir@pyramidproductions.org "ENJOY THE SHOW"
